Expedition Performance and Capability
The Expedition features a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine that produces 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The Platinum model gets the same engine with a higher output of 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. Both engines pair to a smooth 10-speed automatic transmission.
Despite its power and size, the Expedition handles like a dream and offers a smooth ride quality and tight, consistent steering. When properly equipped, the Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds. It’s also an excellent off-road vehicle and boasts 9.8 inches of ground clearance, but you can get more off-road readiness with the FX4 Off-Road package that includes off-road shocks, skid plates, and a limited-slip differential.
Expedition Interior
The Expedition has a massive interior with two rows of seats for five people in the base model and three rows elsewhere in the lineup that offers seating for up to eight. Cloth upholstery comes standard, but synthetic or leather upholstery is available. You can also add heated and ventilated front seats, massaging seats, heated second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel. Regardless of seating position, passengers have plenty of head- and legroom to stretch out and relax on long rides.
The standard-wheelbase model offers between 19.3 and 20.9 cubic feet of space behind the third row, depending on how you configure the seats. With the seats folded flat, the cargo space expands to between 57.5 cubic feet and 63.6 cubic feet behind the second row and a maximum of 104.6 cubic feet behind the first row. The extended-wheelbase model has even more space, offering a maximum of 121.5 cubic feet of space with both rows down.
Expedition Technology
The Expedition comes with a SYNC® 3 infotainment system with straightforward menu options and user-friendly features, such as Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® smartphone compatibility. You can use this feature to stream music and media for entertainment on the road. The Expedition also includes a Wi-Fi hot spot and four USB ports. Optional technology upgrades include HD radio, satellite radio, wireless device charging, navigation, and a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system. You can also add a rear-seat entertainment system with two screens for the kids.
As far as safety features, the Expedition includes a rearview camera and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, which alerts you to vehicles or pedestrians in your blind spots. Forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking is also included, which prevents frontal crashes by alerting you and applying the brakes to lessen the impact. Optional safety features include parking sensors, a surround-view camera system, and adaptive cruise control, which adjusts your speed on the highway to stay with the flow of traffic.
